Large Hadron Collider - The Search For The Higgs [3 of 3]

Uploaded by: Gravitationalist
Video Description:
On November, 2007 the most complex scientific instrument ever built will be switched on. The Large Hadron Collider promises to recreate the conditions in the early universe. By revisiting the beginning of time, scientists hope to
unravel some of the deepest secrets of our Universe.
Within these first few moments the building blocks of the Universe were formed. The search for these fundamental particles has occupied scientists for decades but there remains one particle that has stubbornly refused to appear in any experiment. The Higgs Boson is so crucial to our understanding
of the Universe that it has been dubbed the God particle. It explains how fundamental particles acquire mass, or as one scientist plainly states: "It is what makes stuff stuff..."

I never thought ... ( 1 month ago by ryanponder20)
I never thought about that. How can everything in the universe have mass, but the very particles everything is comprised of is massless. Mind blowing.
the Higgs won't ... ( 1 month ago by hockeypuckmtdew)
the Higgs won't turn up because matter itself doesn't exist
That might be true ... ( 1 month ago by velanstiz)
That might be true after all. What if "mass" was just dense energy? Or Energy that repel?

lets say there is no higgs field; and they are all wrong, what if they make a big black hole?!!! is it realy wise to risk this?!! if they are so sure, why they are so sure that there is a higgs field, why are they doing it?

Because it's our nature to seek out and find answers to what we do not understand. Curiosity has taken us to this point of evolution, now, lets evolve to the next stage.

what if they are all wrong and they blow everybody up!!!!!
i dont thing anyone would like that.
LOL

I am the kind of person that WANTS to know and a big fan of science. I honestly think the potential in this project is worth the extremely small risk involved. Remember that this is all very miniature compared to what created the universe and IF black holes even will occur, it will take place in a closed and controlled environment. Last but not least, I trust that the thousands of scientist involved in this project knows best.

i am big fan of LHC too but when that gentelman says "if we see nnothing thats the best situation becuase we undrestand that we underestod nothing"
the problem is that if we undrestod nothing that might blow us up!!!(at list sweetserland)

I don't think you understood the point. As all others involved in the project he hopes to find he Higgs to prove all their theories right, but if it doesn't exist, it will be just as interesting and eyeopening. When we finally understood and started working out from the idea that the earth is round and not flat, it was a HUGE breakthrough. If the Higgs turns out to not exist, it may be a fundamental revolution of our understanding of the universe at the same level.
i know what that ... ( 1 month ago by kamyarghofrani)
i know what that beans, bbut let me put it this way,
imagen that there is a gun on a table, you think its empty, will you put it on your head to prove your theory?
but i AM a fan of LHC
If all physical ... ( 1 month ago by PredatorDK)
If all physical laws and mathematical equations proves that the chance of the gun being loaded is VERY unlikely or physically impossible, and by pulling the trigger, I will learn secrets of such magnitude as the ones LHC will unlock then yes.
what if there is a ... ( 1 month ago by kamyarghofrani)
what if there is a chance that physic ruls are not right?!!!!
and you are ONE person, not evveryone would do that.
again i am a fan of LHC and i cant see that they don't work with it.
but the thing is not every one is a fan of science like me and you. they would not risk that littel neather, mabe they shoud have a world wide election for it. (for the human rights)

oh common u guys !! plz do not forget !! if there will be a blackhole ..it will be mini black holes inside of Lhc !! and it will not grow unless negative energy or antimatter is supplied to that mini blackhole !! hahah !! and nothing will happen even if !! blackholes will form !!! hahah and they will disappear ..due to no mass or negative energy !! present in it !!

As for this idea ... ( 1 month ago by baconian)
As for this idea that thousands of scientist know best re black hole in the lab. Pal-ease! Einstein himself was wrong about his relativity equation E=M(C squared) ever been used to create an atomic bomb. He said it was impossible. So, if Einstein can be wrong - he was - so can they all, as was proven when the vast majority of scientists were wrong about there being only ten dimensions pursuit to the string theory; all discarding the Grand Unification theory and the 11th dimension for 15 years.
Keep in mind the ... ( 1 month ago by baconian)
Keep in mind the understanding of black holes is a theory; hence all that you speak of with such certainty violates the fundamental principle of science. Theories are constantly shattered as our technology and understanding grow. Where once the world was thought to be flat.... Need I say more.

well they didnt have any materials back then, but yea, i still think that this is real bad to do this. i mean, think about religion, as for example christianity. god created the universe. science: no, that never happened
I don't think ... ( 1 week ago by Cracklericecrispys)
I don't think religion should be brought into this. Science and religion are two different things and have two different view points, and there will always be a debate over who is right and wrong, but we should be able to want to explore our own view point, and not have others telling us that because someone thinks something else we shouldn't be able to it. I think we should all do what we believe in and then find out weather we were right or wrong when we die.
Now to all this ... ( 1 week ago by Cracklericecrispys)
Now to all this debating over the fact that scientist can be wrong (which they can, and we know this from many occasions) I think that yes, there is a chance they are wrong about this, but still, we will never know until we try. And it is just a crime to keep all that intelligence and theory confined to just that; theory. If we never attempt these sorts of experiments we will get no further in discovering more facts about the universe.
*I'm not saying ... ( 1 week ago by Lungreos)
*I'm not saying that science should NOT explore...*
